Frequently Asked Questions
What is cohousing?
Cohousing is an intentional community of private homes gathered around shared common space. Individuals have private spaces and lead private lives, but have the benefit of community activities and spaces. There are several different types of cohousing models, and each is someone unique to the particular group. The amount and style of units, types of amenities, and shared goals and spaces are generally determined by each cohousing community as each group will have different aspirations and goals for what they seek to create. For many, cohousing envisions a community that gathers not just for the big moments, but is there for each other in small ways every day. We will look out for each other, whether that’s looking after someone’s plants while they’re away, or working together to manage a major renovation. Many cohousing groups use consensus-based decision making to determine the best course of action for the community as a whole. Residents can expect to be involved in the ongoing process of living together, managing the upkeep & maintenance of shared spaces. In return, residents will enjoy the benefits of having neighbours that you know & trust, and amenities not usually found in traditional housing options, like large meeting rooms or a large capacity kitchen.

Is cohousing just the newest trend in real estate?
Not at all! Cohousing as it exists now has its roots in Denmark in the 1960's, and the Canadian Cohousing Network has been around for over 30 years, with many projects across the country.
Cohousing was pioneered in Saskatoon by Wolf Willow Cohousing in 2010, and later by Radiance Cohousing in 2018. These projects show the diversity of types of cohousing projects, and are success stories which show great cohousing communities are.
What is Hearthside Commons?
Hearthside Commons (“HSC”) is Saskatoon's newest cohousing development. Started in 2022 by a group of friends who were looking for a change in how they lived, our project strives to offer an alternative vision of what it means to live together. Hearthside Commons is focused on working to build community & share the work of living among its residents. Located at the intersection of Main Street and Wiggins Avenue, we will have room for up to 12 small families.
Why do we want to live in a cohousing community?
To us, it's simple. Imagine being able to talk and laugh with people while doing something as simple as cooking or laundry, to see your loved ones, or to have a helping hand always nearby. Imagine living somewhere that is sustainable in so many different ways- environmentally, socially, psychologically. Imagine the feeling of sitting in a room talking with people you care about- that feeling of warmth and contentment that permeates everything; that is why we want to live in a cohousing community.
Those are our reasons. We know everyone will come with their own reasons, and we’re excited to hear from you! We invite you to take our survey so we can hear from you: Survey
What makes Hearthside Commons different from a regular condo building?
Hearthside Commons is designed to be a size where you know all of your neighbours while still having a wide variety of people around. The main difference is the common space– at HSC, you'll have access to a large kitchen & dining area, gathering places, outdoor space, and other amenities. We plan to design Hearthside Commons to have accessible, functional, and beautiful common spaces. As we are very early in the design phase, there will be lots of opportunities for you to have your input on the project!
In addition to differences in the physical space, we operate Hearthside Commons in a way that offers each resident the ability to have input on decisions that affect the community. This involves using a consensus based decision making model to ensure that everyone contributes to and benefits from living together.
What type of people live in cohousing?
Anyone! Cohousing is designed to create community and to foster sustainable living, so it generally attracts people with those interests.
We want people of all walks of life to feel welcome at Hearthside. Whether you are just starting a family, or looking to downsize in your retirement, there is a place for you at Hearthside Commons.
Will Hearthside have a sauna/woodworking shop/typewriter repair service/ other specific amenity?
As we have not finalized any construction plans, the best way to ensure Hearthside has what you're looking for is to join us! The earlier you join our team the more input you'll have in shaping Hearthside Commons.
Will there actually be a hearth?
Absolutely there will be a hearth.
I’m convinced! When can I move in?
See the our home page for the latest project timeline. We are still early in the design process so the sooner you get in touch, the more input you can have into the design process.
